What is OPG? Why should do OPG ? What can detect OPG?

       Dental x-ray such as OPG and lateral cephalometric radiograph are special x-ray of the TM joint mandible bone and teeth. Taken to given invaluable diagnostic information to dentist.

What is OPG?

 OPG ( orthopantogram) and lat ceph  (lateral cephalometric radiograph) are special x-ray of the lower face teeth and jaws. An OPG is a panoramic or wide view x-ray of the lower face, which displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on single film.

An OPG can be used to look for

  • Fractures
  • Dislocated jaw
  • Infection
  • Dentition (teeth)
  • It can also be used for surgical planning

 

What does show OPG?

      It demonstrates the number, position and growth of all the teeth including those that have not surfaced or erupted. It is different from the small close up x-ray dentist take of individual teeth. An OPG also reveal problems with the jawbone the joint which connects the jawbone to the Head called the temporomandibular joint or TMJ.

     An OPG may be required for the planning of orthodontic treatment, for assessment of wisdom teeth or for a general overview of the teeth and the bone which supports the teeth.

   A lateral cephalometric is a lateral or side view of the face which demonstrates the bone and facial contours in profile on a single film.

Any preparation before doing OPG ?

      No preparation is required for dental x-ray procedures. Please bring any previous x-rays with Report on the day of your examination.

Just before the OPG There is no special preparation for an OPG.

 

Important to tell your doctor before doing OPG

If you are or may be pregnant.

 

Procedure

    You may be asked to remove jewellery, eyeglasses, and any metal objects that may obscure the images. You will be aske to stand with your face resting on a small shelf and to bite gently on a sterile mouth piece to steady your head. It is important to stay  very still at the same time as the x-ray is taken. You will not a feel any discomfort during the procedure.

 

After the OPG

You will be able to go soon after the OPG is finished and can continue with normal activities.
