Why is a Barium Swallow Done?

  • Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)

  • Esophageal strictures or narrowing

How Does the Test Work?

  1. The patient is asked to get ready and remove metallic objects.

  2. The radiologist/technician explains the procedure.

  3. The patient drinks barium liquid in sips or as advised.

  4. X-ray or fluoroscopy images are taken in standing and lying positions.

  5. The swallowing motion and passage of barium are recorded.

  6. The patient can leave soon after the procedure unless instructed otherwise.

Preparation Guidelines

  • Usually no food or drink for 6–8 hours before the test

  • Inform the radiologist if:
