HSG stands for Hystero-Salpingo-Graphy.
It is an X-ray contrast study performed to check the shape of the uterus and the patency (openness) of fallopian tubes using contrast dye and fluoroscopy.
Purpose

Evaluate infertility

Detect uterine abnormalities (fibroids, septa, adhesions, polyps)

Check tubal blockage

Assess post-surgical results (e.g., tubal ligation reversal)
Procedure (Short Overview)
-
Done usually after menstrual period (Day 7–10).

Patient lies in lithotomy position.
-
Catheter inserted into cervix.
-
Contrast dye injected into the uterus.

Fluoroscopy/X-ray images taken to observe uterine cavity & tubes.
Normal Finding
-
Smooth uterine cavity
-
Contrast flows freely through both tubes and spills into peritoneal cavity
Common Feelings

Mild cramping or discomfort
-
Slight vaginal spotting after test
Contraindications

Pregnancy
-
Active pelvic infection
-
Severe bleeding or contrast allergy
